Spats and Spats
We sold our first pair of spats, owned by one of our museum clients. They shipped to a customer in Santiago, Chile. I imagine the owner putting them into productive use, starting a new retro fashion fad, or doing some re-enactment work. Perhaps they'll be part of a costuming for a play or movie production. Many of our vintage and antique items DO end up in prop houses or in the homes of actors and actresses. We love that online retail allows us to find THE perfect home for any item we put out there. It is such a good works project. And the people taking on the vintage items are taking a stand - by reusing, recycling, reemploying. Meantime, we watch the ongoing spats in the news between politicians, media experts, corporations, and communities and individuals who have been wronged. We wonder where personal responsibility has gone. There is a great conversation going on, but there's a lot of energy being spent on finger pointing and blaming. For years we've been saying that 'the blame game' is the biggest racket on the planet. Interesting that media has just recently glommed onto the term and now it's being retweeted everywhere. That's ok, but putting blame on those playing the blame game is the same game RT'd. Where are the voices that are saying 'Here's what I am doing to ....' make things right, take responsibility, take a stand.....? When we start hearing those voices in a big way, and when the media fosters those voices, I believe the media will be well respected once again. Taking a stand is never easy, and it's the easy path to wuss out by measuring every word for politically correct impact. But solving challenging problems comes from thinking outside the box, taking a stand for a belief, pursuing a solution with perserverance, and working from a space of integrity, as well as empathy. We look forward to the day when those fundamental operating policies return to all humans across the planet. Reusing basic 'how to be human' fundamentals, putting them back on like putting on a sweater, or a pair of spats, could do all of us a lot of good. The guy that bought the spats took his stand, he voted with his dollar, and supported a retail ecosystem that supported students, artists, shipping companies, a museum, and a corporate giant who tags along too, living off the backs of the little guys. Our stand is that we'll continue to sell spats, keep things out of landfills, and listen for and help promote those authentic voices who are taking THEIR stand and making a difference.
